'The Love Witch' Employs 1960s Film Techniques to Pay Homage to a Hitchcockian Look

Anna Biller's The Love Witch is a dramatic horror film about a witch whose romantic pursuits have fatal results. The film's look was wholly inspired by films from the 1960s like The Birds, Marnie and Elizabeth Taylor melodramas.

To accommodate those references, cinematographer M. David Mullen shot on 35mm film, employed hard lighting techniques, and finished the film photochemically.

"Color and glamour are Biller’s particular visual obsessions and the hard key light approach emphasizes both," Mullen writes on the ASC blog.
