Production sound mixer Chris Giles is rightly proud to have mixed audio for Moonlight, the winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2017. “Prior to the film, I had been working and learning for years from well established sound mixers. I had become enamored of the Aaton line of recorders. When I heard whispers of a new location sound recorder, the Aaton Cantar X3, I was very excited to see what Aaton would bring to the table. Aaton is known for some of the finest products in cinema, from legendary cameras to the Cantar X1 and Cantar X2 sound recorders.”

Giles continues, “I was attracted to what seemed to be the Aaton philosophy of a small recorder, highly intuitive, working as an extension of the operator, which allowed me to work close to the director and the action. This appealed to me. I took the plunge and ordered a Cantar X3, and was very happy to use it on Moonlight.

“The X3 has it all. I do not need a mixing panel as it’s included in the machine. I have analog inputs, digital inputs and Dante inputs. The preamps and limiters are outstanding. It’s portable, so I can use it in a cart or I can fit it in a bag in the worst environments. You won’t easily run out of tracks as it’s a 24-track machine. There’s an add-on fader panel for high-track-count work. It is equally good for voice and music.”

Aaton recently introduced Cantar Mini, a smaller version, with the same features and quality but with fewer tracks (16).
