A New Hollywood Home for Canon7/18/2012 7:30 AM Eastern
Nestled in the heart of Hollywood is a brand new mecca of digital imagery – the Canon Hollywood Professional Technology and Support Center, a facility dedicated to outreach, support and repair for the Canon professional equipment users.
Located at 6060 Sunset Boulevard, the site officially opened it's doors in November of 2011, and stands on the historical Sunset Gower Studios, where the new facility is dedicated to the community of Canon users, both professional still photographers and cinematographers, especially with the revolution of HDSLRs spurred by the Canon EOS 5DMkii, EOS 7D, EOS 5DMkiii and 1DX as well as the C300 and C500 digital motion picture cameras.
The facility has three main goals: to provide a home base for Canon's regional operations staff; to provide a full service center for Canon Professional Gold and Platinum members; and an educational center for Canon Live Learning seminars and other educational outreach programs.
Starting with the service center, it is incredible news to have a Canon full-service maintenance and repair facility nestled right in Hollywood. This absolutely shows Canon's commitment to the filmmaking community. The service center is available to Canon Professional Services Gold and Platinum members by appointment only, which means you have to own Canon's professional equipment – those of you with T2i, T3i, T4i and XT, and other Canon prosumer cameras can't send your gear here, but if you're already a CPS Gold or Platinum member with Canon professional EOS DSLR cameras, cinema cameras (C300 or C500) XF/XA series of high definition camcorders or professional EF lenses, this new facility has two state-of-the-art camera body and lens adjustment rooms, Canon's most advanced adjustment and calibration equipment, local spare parts inventory, and an experienced repair staff. It is the first Canon facility in the US that provides the precision equipment, staff and expertise to repair all Canon professional lens types and cameras.
The support staff side acts as a base of regional operations with a team who is available to provide training and support to dealers, rental houses and professional Canon users. I met with Amy Kawadler, Supervisor, Professional Products Support, who manages the new facility. She took me on an energetic tour of the new space, including the two historical nitrate film vaults that remain on the property, originally constructed by David Horsley at the W.M. Horsley studios, home of the very first film studio and lab in Hollywood, opened in 1911.
During my tour, I also met and spoke with Gina Virens, Specialist, Marketing Associate On-Site Education ITCH Professional Engineering and Solutions Division, who is the one individual responsible for the educational outreach at the Hollywood Professional Technology and Support Center. She runs two Canon Learning programs per month, which feature official training from Canon educators on their hardware. On the night that I visited the Hollywood center, they were hosting a free training session on the Canon EOS 5D MkIII and EOS 1D X cameras. The education room is a large open space that comfortably sits 60-70 people and these sessions are free and open to the public. The center also offers the space to professional Hollywood originations and unions for meetings and training.
"We are providing an educational space for students, Canon fans, cinematographers, directors, individuals of all experience levels, to come and learn about the Canon products," explains Virens. "We want this place to be a home for people who have an interest in photography and filmmaking, and we want to help teach and inspire them to get out and follow their dreams."
The facility presents the first time that Canon has had a home base with doors open to the public – although only for their educational programs. The quiet, relatively nondescript entrance off of Sunset Blvd in Hollywood isn't one you can just walk into and say hello. Unless there's an open event, you need to make an appointment to meet with a Canon professional or, if you're a CPS member at the Gold or Platinum level, to get service for your gear.
