LiveU Brings 'Mystery Tattoo' Live to Fans on Facebook

Ami James, co-owner of Miami Beach's Love Hate Tattoo Studio and star of the TLC reality show Miami Ink, recently expanded his tattoo media brand by hosting an interactive game show on Facebook Live. James and Danish production company Drive Studios partnered on the production, called Mystery Tattoo, delivering eight 50-minute live episodes via James' Tatoodo Facebook page. Midtown Video consulted and provided live streaming services.

Drive Studios designed the shoot with two Canon EOS C300 cameras, a Roland VR50HD switcher, wireless HD-SDI links for the cameras, and an accompaniment of wireless audio for host Ami James and the Love Hate Tattoo artists. To maximize upstream bandwidth in the location, which did not have reliable internet access, Midtown used LiveU's Solo video streaming solution. The outbound stream was split across multiple network interfaces including 4G LTE.

"LiveU was crucial for the production as the tattoo parlor had low bandwidth," notes Midtown's Jesse Miller.

"It took about two minutes to understand, and in the end, Solo was stable and performed flawlessly," adds Kasper Dahl Verner, head of production at Drive Studios.

The show's premise embraces the interactivity with viewers social media platforms enable. Facebook viewers voted in real time to decide which tattoo designs would be inked on contestants knocked out after each round of competition. Clicking certain face emojis would register a vote for the corresponding tattoo design. The winning contestant received a free tattoo from James. Mystery Tattoo garnered more than 1 million views.
