Re: How do I make HDV clones?

No DV deck will even be able to read an HDV tape. You must use HDV decks.

I don't know if any HDV deck or camera allows cloning with timecode. What type of HDV are you cloning -- 720p or 1080? ...

    Re: HDV resolution question

Activ8 makes a good point which I should also have brought up.

    4x3 DV is 720x480.
    16x9 DV is 720x480.

The difference is not in the pixel count, it's in the shape of the pixels.

    720p HDV is...

    Re: HDV resolution question

The CCDs on a Sony HDCAM camcorder are 1920x1080. But when it goes to record on tape, it downsamples to anamorphic 1440x1080. Upon playback, the image gets digitally up-rezzed to 1920x1080.

    The...

    Re: HDV resolution question

Corey, the part you're missing is that the FX1's pixels are not square. They're wide rectangles.

The pixel count is 1440x1080, and the aspect ratio is 1.78:1. The pixels aren't square.

    Re: HDV resolution question

    Putting a 1.33:1 anamorphic lens (also known as a 16x9 lens) on an FX1 would give you a 2.37:1 aspect ratio (16/9 * 1.333).

It would mean footage that wouldn't properly display on any television...

Re: Microphone and battery for DVX100A

A CGR-D54 lasts about 5 and a half hours on a DVX. On a little consumer cam it'd last nine, but on the bigger/power-hungry DVX it lasts for five and a half.

    Great battery. But a little...

Re: telephoto nd wide angle for dvx100a

Digital Optics products are very cheap, and they don't work at all with the DVX. The behavior you're describing is not at all normal (for quality lenses) but typical of Digital Optics/Crystal...

Re: what to do with old vx-1000?

VX1000's seem to be popular with shooters who shoot skateboard videos. You probably couldn't rent it, but you might be able to sell it on ebay to a skate shooter.

    Re: How does it work?

Sounds like you've been using it under optimal conditions -- and in those conditions, it can look very, very good.

If you want to see less-than-optimal circumstances, try shooting a basketball...

The myth that HDCAM is 4:2:2 extends to Sony staff at trade shows and a lot of websites. I had to double check you on this, and found extensive myth that it was 4:2:2.

    Re: How does it work?

But HDCAM isn't 4:2:2... it's 3:1:1. Halfway between 4:1:1 and 4:2:2, but not as good as 4:2:2. It's a fantastic format no doubt, but not up to HDCAM SR's standards... HDCAM records a subsampled...

    Re: How does it work?

So if DV is a 7 and DigiBeta is a 10, then HDV is arguably better than 10, and I'd guess it may look closer to HDCAM than DigiBeta under decent conditions.

    Re: Sony HVR-A1U - $3500

Seems to be basically an HDV equivalent to the PD100/TRV900 series, except one CMOS chip instead of three CCDs. The consumer version (HC1) is quite affordable, expected to be priced under $2000 I...

Re: HDV File Size vs SD

HDV 1080i uses the same data rate as DV, so the storage space will be the same: 13 gigs per hour.

HDV 720p uses a smaller data rate, so it will require a little less storage space. It runs at...

  21. Re: HD100U Downconvert? & HDV Camera Chart

A couple of things about your chart:

You left off DVCPRO-50 off the Panasonic. That gives you standard-def with 4:2:2 color sampling and much milder compression. Much better quality than DV,...

We matched a PD150, DVX, and JVC DV5000. The DVX to JVC was pretty easy, but matching the PD150 took a lot more work. It can be done. The main thing is to have an understanding of what the menu...

I don't think CBS is covering any of the "lesser" playoff series, but they should definitely be covering the NBA finals. Those are a ways away though. They're still in the first round.
