How We Did It: SNL 'Djesus Uncrossed'

Alex Buono of Alex-Buono.com writes: I’ve been looking forward to writing this post about one of my favorite spots of this season, “Djesus Uncrossed”.  First I should acknowledge that this was, by far, the most controversial spot I’ve been a part of in my history with the show.  Religious groups were infuriated while pop artists were inspired to create fan-art.

'The Quest For Inspiration' Documents Landscape Photographer’s Journey

Mike Wilkinson of FStoppers writes: Seven months ago I shared the trailer for a documentary about French Landscape Photographer Alexandre Deschaumes, as he creates stunning landscape images all over the world. His travels have taken him to Patagonia, Iceland, Austria, and more, while the time he spends in nature is the time where he seems to get the most creative. The hour long documentary is finally available (for a small fee.)

Jonah Kessel Field Tests the Canon C100 in Burma

Jonah Kessel of News Shooter writes: I went to Burma with a simple task: to investigate challenges to Myanmar’s nascent model of democracyusing the mining industry as a device to talk about bigger issues. Wait, that wasn’t simple at all. In fact, that was very complicated. However, my second goal of the trip was simple: to field test the Canon C100 in a large variety of environments in a real world context. This would be the opposite of a desk test.

1080p is better than 4k. (Or Why I Chose The Canon C100)

Ryan E. Walters of Cinematographer writes: After many years of owning a wide range of camera systems, including a Red One and an Epic, I decided to sell it all and rent. So for the past three years I have been exclusively renting cameras on a per project basis, that is until recently when I made the plunge and bought the Canon C100. Little did I know how many eyebrows and questions it would raise when I posted a picture on Facebook.

Sony F55 Review & Music Video 'DEJA – Struck by the light'

Nino Leitner of Ninofilm.net writes: The music video for “DEJA – Struck by the Light” came around at the right time to make it a camera test for the brand-new Sony F55. The target audience for the song are teenage girls, and I think few of my readers fall into this target group, so I don’t blame you if the music is not for you – but if it is, please support the artist Deja by buying the song via iTunes or Amazon.

The World According to Steven: Insights from Soderbergh (with video)

Eugene Hernandez of Film Society Lincoln Center writes: “Cinema is under assault,” Steven Soderbergh told an audience in San Francisco over the weekend. He said that the Hollywood studios are to blame and that moviegoers are their accomplices. "Fewer and fewer executives in the industry love movies,” Soderbergh continued, “There's a total lack of leadership in my opinion, that's what's killing cinema."

Footage in Your Pocket

John Brawley of Ramblings of a Cinematographer writes: So it’s time to look at some footage from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. This footage was shot over about an hour at my local market on Sunday morning.  So yeah, it’s just home movies. I was literally grabbing shots where I could whilst I was shopping !  But, you do get to see what one man can do with a pocket cinema camera and a 12-35 Panasonic m4/3 zoom.  I guess for those that like to shoot discretely, guerrilla or documentary style, this will give you a good sense of what you’re going to get.  The same great DR and look has been inherited from the BMCC.

NAB2013 Discussion Panel Replay: IS DSLR Video Dead?

Mat Gallagher of NewsShooter writes: In the first of our discussion panels, originally streamed live from the Teradek booth at NAB2013, Matt Allard hosts Andy Shipsides from Abel Cine, Jason Wingrove, and Paul Schnieder as they discuss the question ‘is DSLR Video dead?’ With the growth of cameras such as the C300, Epic and Blackmagic, cinematographers are moving away from the DSLR, but does the EOS 5D still have a use? Time Lapse Intro: Part I

Vincent Laforet writes: I was commissioned to do a Time Lapse Tutorial series late last year that was just recently published by Canon and people really seem to be enjoying it so I thought I would share it on this blog as well.    You can find the first video below and then go to Canon’s site for the remaining episodes.  I also wanted to write about some of the gear that I’ve come to rely on to do all of my time lapse photography – notably motorized sliders by Kessler.   So go ahead and check out the video below if you’re interested, and read on for a detailed list of gear and why I use it below that.

14bit RAW “Video" on Canon DSLRs with Magic Lantern

Luke at NeumannFilms.net writes: As you may have heard by now, we got our hands on the new Magic Lantern firmware for the Canon 5D Mark II and Mark III.  We are impressed, to say the least! This firmware is still in the early stages as we are only able to capture 10-14 fps for 1-2 seconds but we are confident that Magic Lantern will (like they always have) maximize the camera and it’s potential. From Magic Lantern:  No mirror flip or shutter curtain movement; DNG silent pics for 5D2/5D3. This is a big deal for time lapsers who sometimes shoot 1000 or more shots in 1 sitting. This can significantly extend the life of their cameras. Also bodes well for RAW video in 14-bit RAW data in LiveView in the future. READ THE FULL STORY HERE.

Jibophobia or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the One Man Jib!

Philip Bloom of PhilipBloom.net writes: Jib shots can be epic. Especially on the really big ones. I have seen some shots which are beyond amazing from enormous ones. But these require large crews and cost a fortune. Smaller jibs ARE capable of getting gorgeous shots too though, and the quest for an ultra-portable low cost jib for the new generation of lighter cameras has been going for about a year now. I have tried four different ones. First off, the DSLR Devices one, then the one from Lightcraft Workshop, then the one I backed on Kickstarter the Aviator Jib and now this one, The Kessler Pocket Jib Traveler.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera Video Review/Documentary - Resolution vs RAW!

Michal of motionVFX Team writes: The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is shipping again, so it's nice to find another indeep review of the camera. This time it was made by Lionel Josh Lee, but the video also features many filmmakers who share their opinions on the camera. According to Lionel, this is not exactly a review made to allow you to decide if you should get the camera, but more of a short documentary that covers the importance of RAW and resolution and where in reality the Blackmagic's camera fits in. But it can still be pretty helpful and if features a lot of info on the unit, besides Lionel shared some of his thoughts in the video description and he believes that it offers great RAW and can be perfect for shooting movies even though he feels that some changes should be made. Anyway, make sure to watch the video!
