Calculate Your Field of View When Using Your Own Lenses on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera
Ruben Kremer has created a handy form to help you calculate the effective focal length of your current lenses on the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. He writes, "You're thinking about getting one of these camera's, are you not? Of course you are. The active Micro Four Thirds mount will enable you to put practically every lens on this camera. But what will happen to the field of view (FoV) with the lenses you own?" Read his full post here.

Watch a Microscopic Time-Lapse Music Video
To create visuals to accompany Jon Hopkins' organic compositions, photographer Linden Gledhill and art director Craig Ward put together photographs on a microscopic scale, often depicting chemical reactions. Writes DL Cade of PetaPixel, "All of the images were captured in Gledhill’s basement, using his 5D Mark II attached to an Olympus BH-2 research microscope. Ranging in magnification from 200x to 1000x, you have no idea what you’re looking at, but Hopkins explains that this is the closest he’s ever gotten to an actual visualisation of the images his music evokes inside his head." Watch the completed video and a making-of below. Read more here.

The Many Lenses of Panasonic's GH2 and GH3
Phil Rhodes of RedShark News writes up the Panasonic GH2 and GH3's lens changing capabilities. He writes, "One of the things that's most interesting about Panasonic's GH series of stills cameras is their usability with lenses intended for 2/3” television cameras. This is an attractive idea to those of us who'd like to get access to the low cost of DSLR moviemaking, but would prefer to avoid the shallow depth of field and questionable handheld ergonomics of large-sensor cameras when shooting documentaries. Of course, there are considerations of sensor size and mechanical mounting to worry about, but that's one of the things the GH line solves for us." Read the full story here.

Stefan Muller on Shooting Short Film 'The Scent' on the Canon C100
Michael Murie of Filmmaker Magazine talks to Stefan Muller about his short film "The Scent," which he shot on the Canon C100. Says Muller about the production, "I am so happy with the C100 because of its form factor. I didn’t feel the need for a rig, it’s such a lightweight camera and for the few handheld shots in the film, I trusted the Image Stabilization of the lens and I’m glad that worked out. I only used the Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS lens, and a Manfrotto 055xprob tripod with the 501 head. I also used a Kessler Stealth Traveller slider and some Litepanel Croma kit lights." Read the full story here. Watch "The Scent" below.

Time-lapse expert Preston Kanak walks you through how to shoot day to night time-lapses. He writes, "As many people have proclaimed, day to night or night to day time-lapses are the ‘holy grail’ of time-lapse shooting. They tend to draw the attention of viewers because of their assumed complexity. At the same time, what people don’t understand is that they aren’t as tough to achieve as they appear. In this blog post, I will quickly walk you through a few different ways of capturing these types of shots." Watch the tutorial video below and read more here on Kessler University.

Photographer and DP Tyler Stableford on Making the Transition from Stills to Video
Mat Gallagher of News Shooter talks to photographer turned cinematographer Tyler Stableford about his transition from stills to video. Says Stableford, "Last year (2012) maybe 60% of my income or more was through video. It was unexpected that it grew so rapidly in the course of a few short years. In 2010 I think I was self-funding video just to have a folio of work and now it’s happening so quickly. I directed my first national television campaign this fall, and I’m working on a great range of projects from small to big, it’s very exciting." Read the full story here.

How Google Created Earth Engine
Google Visiting Scientist Randy Sargent talks to Sean Gallagher of Ars Technica about Google's Earth Engine, which compiles years of satellite data to present the earth in new and interesting way (like Timelapse). Says Sargent, "We began to realize a few years back that Google Maps could be augmented to support all sorts of data. We had this idea that we could extend it to support multispectral (imagery) data. And given that we were getting feeds over time, we could store them as time-based sets, so you could go back and forth in time to look at changes. That idea became the Earth Engine project." Watch the Trailer for Randy Halverson's Time-Lapse Feature, 'Horizons'
Watch the trailer for time-lapse maestro Randy Halverson's 31-minute "Horizons." Writes Phil Plait of Slate's Bad Astronomy, "In this one, given the name, I kept half an eye on the horizon itself, and became mesmerized by the motion I was seeing; stars, aurorae, tall grass in the breeze, and clouds. Especially the clouds; I’ve seen the full-length movie and the clouds steal the show, especially the storm clouds. Convection cells take on an added might and menace when seen in time-lapse, punching upwards convectively like a fist into the sky, lightning dancing underneath. It’s astonishing." Read more here.
