Roald Christessen on Building His Own Raw Cinema Camera

EOSHD talks to Roald Christessen who single-handedly built his own raw cinema camera and grading software. They write, "The camera has a global shutter CCD sensor, which is the same Trusense (ex-Kodak) sensor used in the Ikonoskop. It gives a lovely cinematic image and very filmic colour with no rolling shutter skew." Read the full story here. Watch sample footage from the camera below.

DP Chris Doyle (In the Mood for Love) talks to Allan Tong of Filmmaker Magazine about Away With Words, his video installation that's appearing at TIFF's Century of Chinese Cinema summer program. Says Doyle, "Away With Words is a statement on cinematography. Away With Words is a way of dealing with words. It’s a way of getting away from words, for example taking a script or a dialogue of an actor and trying to give it the resonance or the impact or the integrity it needs.” Read the full story here.

Sony F55: 'The Best of Both Worlds'

DP Jendra Jarnagin writes up her experiences testing out the Sony F55 for a new feature she's shooting called A Bet's a Bet. She writes, "Prior to this camera, I felt the Sony F65 made the best images, and that the ARRI Alexa was the best all around camera to use, when all things were considered. (In other words, in many production situations, the tradeoffs of using the F65 were not worth the increase in image quality when so many other cameras look so good.) I so far feel like this camera is the best of both worlds, with serious plusses and so far no minuses that I can find or think of. I expect seriously fast adoption of this camera as the new professional camera of choice."

Color Correction Vs. Color Enhancement

Ben Cain clears up some confusion about the terms color correction vs. color enhancement. He writes, "'Color Correction' is one thing... finding a reference within the scene and then matching the rest of the material to it. 'Color Enhancement' on the other hand, is the work usually done in the DI Suite. This term should refer to 'improving the aesthetics of an image, establishing stylized looks, and setting the mood of a scene through color' (from wikipedia). In my mind it's very important to draw the distinction between the two as they are potentially different services, may require different working conditions and time commitment, and are ultimately different skill levels - one very technical, the other creative."
